Cover Home: Welcome to MariSol
An “indigenous botanical garden” is the way judges at last year’s Pacific Coast Builders Conference described the setting of our cover home, which netted six awards. Naturally, the architecture and the finishes are stunning, with a great room spacious enough to accommodate a very large event. Still, the home nurtures rather than overwhelms. With two master suites in separate wings, and other bedrooms, privacy for owners as well as family and friends is assured.
The first of just 17 homes to be built in MariSol, a new community set on 80 acres on a private bluff on Malibu’s rural western shore, it overlooks what, Joyce Rey, executive director of Coldwell Banker Previews International, describes as “the most fabulous surfing spot in Southern California.” Our cover home even has a 4,000-square-foot bluff-top sandy beach. “Magical” might be a fitting description, but most would also use “authentic” and “awe-inspiring” when talking about this home, as well as MariSol. “Once you arrive at the house, you won’t want to leave because the living environment is so spectacular,” says Rey, who is listing the home for $17 million.
From the flawless integration of indoor and outdoor spaces to the way each site melds into the surrounding habitat, making dramatic ocean and mountain views a centerpiece, every facet of both our cover home and the community strikes a perfect balance. Developers Richard Morris and Ronald Coleman have paid as much homage to ecology as they have to creating spacious homesites that guarantee privacy. To bring the acreage back to what it was centuries ago, they harvested seeds from prominent local specimens, nurturing more than 20,000 plants to be used in the restoration, which also involved importing more than 2,000 local trees. A one-acre botanical garden features over 120 native species and is also an official Monarch butterfly way station.
Construction in Malibu, especially on the water, involves a tedious approval process. But MariSol is free of coastal development permits and city restrictions, which makes construction very easy and fast. And it’s just another reason why it is so exceptional.
