Glass Masterpiece aims to Shatter Records once more
Even amid these tough economic times, New York City never fails to keep its name in the top headlines of luxury real estate.
According to a recent article in The New York Times, a Hudson Street penthouse that stole the spotlight back in 2009 for being the most expensive apartment ever sold south of Columbus Circle has recently made its way back onto the market and is looking to break records once again.
The duplex penthouse — which sits atop a 14-story Art Deco apartment building — is currently listed at $45 million, approximately $15 million more than it sold for back in 2009.
This elegant glass structure provides panoramic views of its bold surroundings, including that of the Hudson and Lower Manhattan. And intricate glass architecture and details designed by the renowned James Carpenter turn this home into a sparkling oasis.
Encompassing nearly 7,500 square feet of interior living and 4,500 square feet of exterior space on a wraparound terrace, this penthouse provides New York City living unlike any other. Two stairways, three fireplaces, and custom millwork in plain-sawn cherry wood enhance the charm, in addition to unique features such as a climate-control system, self-adjusting lighting, and perfectly proportioned walls for artwork to share with the sunlight.
The current homeowner allowed a tour of the penthouse under the condition that he was not to be identified, and no photographs were to be taken of his extensive art collection.
“Everything is customized to the nth degree,” says Leonard Steinberg, a managing director of Prudential Douglas Elliman, the broker handling the sale.
Steinberg also says that although the overall style of the penthouse remains very modern, the terrace reflected the building’s classical Art Deco origins with restored parapets that provide detailing and privacy not found in any other penthouse within the area.
