The Homes of the Year

By Mark Moffa

The staff of Unique Homes took on a daunting task to kick off the celebration of our 40th year. We combed all six 2010 issues — a total of exactly 1,000 pages — to find our favorite homes.

We figured it would be appropriate to select 40 of them; and we figured the fairest way to do it would be to have different pricing categories so that an unparalleled $100 million estate in Lake Tahoe was not competing for our attention against a lovely $3.95 million villa in the West Indies.

So, we looked for the homes with the best designs and aesthetics; the most impressive amenities and uses of technology; the most amazing views; unrivaled abilities to entertain; the highest degrees of livability; the greatest “wow” factors; or whatever else may have made those particular listings jump right off the page. We judged only on the photos and information that appeared about that home in our issues.

Our votes were tallied, and the resulting “Top 10” lists follow on the next four pages, in descending price order. We’re not going to tell you which ones we liked the best — we’d rather know what you think. You will be able to find links to more information about each active listing and vote for your favorite from each list.

Without further ado (insert drum roll here), our 40 Homes of the Year are…

  1. This spectacular home is located on the finest sand beach on Lake Charlevoix in Michigan’s northwest lower peninsula. Large enough for a small army this fine residence looks and feels like a home.
