More Than Just A Home

“One of a kind” is often used to describe homes featured on our covers. When applied to this issue’s cover, a portfolio of properties comprising the privately held real estate on the harbor in Cohasset, Mass., that claim is literally true. At least that’s the best estimate of Jonathan Radford, who is listing the portfolio for $55 million with Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage. “I have not been able to find another offering like this worldwide,” he says. Rather than a single mansion, this issue’s cover includes a Georgian Revival Mansion called The Oaks; The Cohasset Harbor Inn; Atlantica and the Olde Salt House restaurants; and the Mill River Marina.
Cohasset is a much-desired coastal community about 25 miles south of Boston. “Potentially the most exceptional property on the New England coastline,” is how Radford describes The Oaks, which includes a 9.41-acre, private peninsula with 1,800 feet of frontage on the harbor and a white sandy beach. The estate has a long pedigree that includes Clarence Barron, owner of the Dow Jones Company, the Wall Street Journal and Barron’s Magazine.
A substantial investment by the current owners has modernized and expanded the residence and added new gardens. A new wing incorporates a spacious kitchen and family room with spectacular views extending past the terraced gardens to the water and the dock. The transition between old and new was executed so flawlessly that from the exterior it is impossible to tell which wing is new. Also making this home a standout among coastal estates is the 112-foot-long, deep-water dock in the shelter of Cohasset Harbor.
The three businesses included in the portfolio are run with extreme competence, so whoever purchases the portfolio will not have to be concerned about day-to-day management, but they will be “within striking distance to keep an eye on them,” explains Radford.
