Team Lake Nona took the Tavistock Cup this year in Orlando, Fla., defeating Team Isleworth for the second time in the tournament’s six-year history.
The Tavistock Cup is a two-day event that pits the touring professional golf members of Lake Nona Golf & Country Club against those at Isleworth Golf & Country Club.
While Isleworth established a 6-4 lead over Lake Nona following the first day of competition, Graeme McDowell helped lead Team Lake Nona to a 17-13 victory on the final day, finishing with the day’s low score of -6 (66).
As the low medalist, McDowell took home the Payne Stewart Salver Award. Team Lake Nona’s Justin Rose and Team Isleworth’s Darren Clarke and Stuart Appleby were runners-up with a score of -4 (68).
Retief Goosen won the Old Mutual Long Drive Challenge on Hole No. 9 with a drive measuring 325 yards, and Tiger Woods won on Hole No. 15 with a 320-yard drive during the first round.
Since the tournament’s inception, Isleworth has claimed three Tavistock Cup titles — in 2004, 2006 and 2008. Team Lake Nona won its first Tavistock Cup in 2007. In 2005, Team Lake Nona and Team Isleworth finished tied following a thrilling three-hole playoff.
Over the past six years, the tournament has donated millions of dollars to many worthy organizations around the globe, including M. D. Anderson Cancer Center Orlando, The First Tee and the University of Central Florida Foundation. Thanks to their victory, members of Team Lake Nona donated $1 million to the charities of their choice, $100,000 per player.
The Tavistock Cup returns to Isleworth Golf & Country Club March 15-16, 2010.
